Great tips for designing your website

When designing a website for the first time, there are some essential tips you should keep in mind in order to make your website attractive and easy to use.

These tips are based on the habits of Internet users since they make up your primary audience.

Internet users are drawn to quality and credibility, so they are likely to spend more time on websites that have quality content. However, they are still more interested in scanning information for keywords and sentences than to read the entire contents of a webpage. They’re more inclined to seek instant gratification than to spend time, absorbing all of your content. Taking these characteristics into account, here are a few of the important steps to take into account when designing your website and adding content.

Don’t encourage your users to think too hard. The easier it is for your users to navigate, the more attracted they’ll be to your website. Making it too complicated can cause your users to get lost in the pages of your site, and they’re more likely to go somewhere else than to continue to struggle with your website.

Keep the attention of your users. It helps to make your website eye-catching to garner more attention for your site. Using a moderate amount of visual elements can be pleasing to the eye, but it’s important that you don’t overdo it. Adding too many graphics and colours to your website can end up becoming an eyesore, and make it more difficult for your users to read your page. Pick a set colour scheme and only use graphics to draw attention to the important content of your site.

Don’t be afraid of having white space on your page. Most website designers feel as if every space of their website should be filled with content, but this only results in users avoiding your website altogether. Cramming all of the information on one page can lead to a sensory overload, and the user won’t know where to start. Provide enough white space for the user to access the content on your page so that he or she can figure out where to start.

Adjust your writing style to accommodate the preferences of the user. Long blocks of text alone are likely to be skipped altogether. Use short and concise phrases to get your point across. Also, plain and objective language works well so that your content seems less like an advertisement and more like an objective paragraph.

And lastly – don’t fall into the temptation of adding everything you see on other websites to yours; it will only end up looking like a chaotic mess, and no one will want to read it  🙂
